Brokeback Mountain Wins Big Gay Award
Then buzz it up

Anyone thinking that the Brokeback Mountain awards Juggernaut had juddered to a halt after the losing out to Crash at the Oscars is wrong - Brokeback Mountain just won a GLAAD award.
You know GLAAD - the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. It had its annual Media Awards on Monday, and presented the award for Outstanding Motion Picture In Wide Release to Brokeback Mountain, which beat other gay-themed movies like Capote, Rent and the bits with the hilarious transsexuals from The Longest Yard.
The Oscars seem like they took place a lifetime ago now, and all the
highlights are distant memories. Highlights like Jennifer Garner nearly falling over,
Tom Hanks swearing furiously as he walked on stage, Jane Seymour taking
the world’s smallest guitar to the ceremony with her, and Brokeback Mountain getting stiffed by Crash for Best Feature.
But now, Brokeback Mountain (DVDs) is back on the awards train, scooping
the Outstanding Motion Picture In Wide Release prize at the GLAAD Media
Awards. A cynic might suggest that a film about gay cowboys such as
Brokeback Mountain winning an award from a gay organisation is a bit of
a no-brainer, but after missing out on the top prize at the Oscars, Ang
Lee is just grateful for whatever he can get:
"Finally, an award
that actually means something to me. Some of these are very meaningful
to me. OK, there was one that got away, but that’s OK… [This is] the
very last award I will accept for Brokeback Mountain… and to end the
journey here tonight is like coming home. The fact is, Brokeback
Mountain has helped to change the world."
Changed the world? Possibly. Made a man spend $100,000 on a shirt? Definitely. But GLAAD has been doing much more than watching Brokeback Mountain on a loop and shouting at Simon Cowell for being homophobic
- it also handed out awards to Morgan Spurlock for a gay-themed episode
of 30 Days, Oprah Winfrey for a gay themed talk show instalment, and singers
Melissa Etheridge and Bright Eyes for singing about being gay.
That’s all very well, GLAAD, but where was the award for Basic Instinct 2? There’s a brilliant bit with two lesbians going at it, and you totally ignored it. Still, there’s always next year.
