Think of Bristol and what comes to mind? Massive Attack? Portishead? 12-year-old heroin addicts roaming the streets? That’s not what Bristol wants - it wants a massive Wallace And Gromit statue.

Obviously this would be the time and place to crack a funny line about how a Wallace And Gromit statue would be made of plasticine and would thus melt in the sun, but we’re not going to succumb to such obvious behaviour - everyone knows that the air will get to the plasticine and it’ll go hard and crack, instead.

Wallace And Gromit (DVDs) are now bona fide screen legends. Their Oscar on
Sunday (Best Animated Feature - Wallace And Gromit In The Curse of The
Were-Rabbit
) was their fourth. That means that Wallace And Gromit are
now as successful as Martin Scorsese, Nicole Kidman, Sean Connery,
Frank Sinatra, Woody Allen
and Rob Schneider combined. And that sort of
performance just can’t go unrewarded.

Councillors in Bristol - the home to Wallace And Gromit creators
Aardman Animation - are pushing ahead plans for a giant Wallace And
Gromit statue to be erected in the city. Matthew Symonds, who seems to
have come up with the idea, told The Scotsman:

"Everyone loves Wallace and Gromit and everyone I’ve spoken to on
this matter agrees that we should thank Aardman in some way for what
they have done for the city. They really have placed Bristol on the map worldwide - and because
of Aardman, a sizable animation and special effects motion picture
company that has made a big impact on the city. With Hollywood and Oscar success they could easily have left to
seek their fortune elsewhere. After starring in four Oscar-winning
productions I think that Wallace and Gromit have certainly earned a
statue now."

Whether or not the Wallace And Gromit statues will sport the ‘hilarious’ bow-ties that Nick Park and Steve Box ‘hilariously’ wore to accept their Oscar on Sunday is another case entirely.
