Of all the Superman Returns criticism – about the the religious allegories and the stupid baby and, oh, everything – one fact got lost in the mix.
And that was that the Superman Returns Superman was a bit rubbish. As Superman, Brandon Routh had all the charisma of a mannequin with a polystyrene Christopher Reeve head. If anyone was ever silly enough to make a sequel to Superman Returns, then surely they’d do the decent thing and ditch Brandon Routh, right?
Wrong! According to DC Comics President Paul Levitz, Brandon Routh is definitely still on to make the Superman Returns sequel. Although it seems a bit of a wasted opportunity to bring back Brandon Routh, perhaps you can understand Levitz’s rationale once you’ve heard what the new Superman movie is going to be called – Superman Stands Around Unconvincingly. Genius.
2008 has, by and large, been a good year for superhero movies. Iron Man had vim and wit and swagger, The Dark Knight had complex, highbrow sensibilities and a man with a silly gruff voice and The Incredible Hulk had… um. Anyway, it’s a good year for superhero movies.
Unlike 2006. And that’s because 2006 was the year of Superman Returns. Superman Returns was hands down the worst Superman movie ever made and, given that the other Superman movies featured Superman splitting in half, an evil Superman being created out of some hair, a robot with wire for hair and a bearded baddie from another planet who had a face shaped like a shoebox, that’s really saying something.
The things that audiences wanted – like Superman throwing skyscrapers into the sun and eye-lasering petrol stations until they exploded – were completely missing from Superman Returns, and in their place was soppy girl-eyed mimsying, a sort of Superman version of Scrappy Doo and Kate titting Bosworth. Superman Returns was so terrible that, even though it was the sixth-biggest movie of the year, not even the producers seemed keen to make a sequel.
And then, not so long ago, we started to hear murmurs of a ‘reboot’. The Superman Returns writers were ditched, and it seemed as though people wanted to pretend that the movie never happened at all. And that meant getting rid of Brandon Routh.
Oh, you know. Brandon Routh. The chap who played Superman. Tall guy. Giant penis. Zero charisma. Like watching a particularly uninteresting bowl of dust. Oh, you know. Anyway, rumours from a couple of months ago seemed to suggest that Brandon Routh’s rubbish services were no longer required for this Superman reboot, but now we’re hearing differently.
Latino Review spoke to DC Comics President Paul Levitz, and he gave the impression that Brandon Routh is going to be Superman forever! Or at least until the next Superman movie when everyone realises that they didn’t actually like him all along and the movie flops horribly.
In fact, he told me that “Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do  Brandon? He did say Brandon Routh was coming around talking about Superman! Why the hell would they be talking to Brandon if he was not going to be part of the reboot? Because he’s still in the mix!!!
Actually, we’ve been a bit hard on Brandon Routh here. Maybe if the Superman Returns sequel has a better script and asks him to do more than sit in a tree staring forlornly at Kate titting Bosworth, he’ll be able to deliver more. Besides, if Brandon Routh ever got dropped as Superman, we all know exactly who’d be taking his place.
Shia LaBeouf. And nobody wants that to happen. Unless they’re weird.

Shia LaBeouf is the seventh seal, the new plague, humas ebola, and second only to Manolo Blahnik in the “seriously, no one has such a stupid name in real life. Are you actually called Derek?” stakes.
IMO brandon routh was the only redeeming feature in superman returns. “The man of steel” has got some momentum now, bryan singer has been trying to eek it out like a bad curry for years now.
Although Mark Millar of marvel fame (Ultimates, war heroes, civil war, kick ass, wanted) has said he wants to make a trilogy of superman films, but DC will probs shit all over that
“IMO brandon routh was the only redeeming feature in superman returns.”
Believe me when I say I mean no offense, but hogwash. I wholeheartedly agree with Stuart.
“Brandon Routh had all the charisma of a mannequin”
Warner can’t seriously be considering carrying him over to the reboot. It’s a bad decision and will bring with it all the crappy baggage from Returns.
Superman Returns worse than Superman 3? That’s quite an exaggeration. Routh was very well cast, and you can’t change the lead two times in a row, it looks desperate. Bosworth was horribly cast though, she should be out for sure, I could live with that.
They need to get rid of Bryan Singer too, he’s too emo. Look at X2, awesome opening scene with nightcrawler, then 2 hours of emo angst and non displays of powers. He even made Wolverine boring.
Superman Returns worse than Superman III or Superman IV. It is better than both of these and it is superior to Richard Lesters Superman II which made no sense in so many areas and took what was a serious superhero mive(Superman the Movie) and attempted to turn it into a comic mess. What were you smoking before you wrote this article. Brandon routh is a very good actor and Superman Returns is a very good movie. The sequel will be even better as Warner’s and D.C. have gotten the “up the action” message!
All the dreamers out there…Routh is not going to be Superman again with the reboot. Sorry to burst your bubble. I cannot fault Routh as it was Singer who picked him. I had two big issues with Routh. The first was that he was an attempt to be a Reeve clone. The 2nd is that he did not have a Superman build or presence. He is good for a Halloween Supes, but I’m sorry , he is just not a movie Superman! Routh is NOT going to be in the reboot.
Brandon Routh was one of the good things about Superman Returns! I’m glad he’ll (hopefully) be repraising his role in either a reboot or a sequel. Also, Superman Returns was at least better than Superman III, IV and possibly even the Lester Cut of II (Superman emblem throw???). And for the people saying you can’t Reboot with the same actors, look at Casino Royale with Judi Dench as M. Anyways, with a better script Routh will be able to pull it off. I’d far and ahead rather have him than Welling put on the tights.
Brandon Routh is totally superman! He was the best part of that 3 hour movie. They just need a new director and a better script. As for everyone bashing his acting he was probably asked to do a certain way. If he was given the right material he would be amazing. Kate was casted wrong that I agree on.
So is the person who wrote this a disappointed Superman fan or just someone who enjoys being hateful and snarky?
Sorry to be ridiculously positive and totally uncool but I think Shia, Brandon and Returns are all terrific.
Good. I felt Superman Returns had its flaws, but Routh wasn’t one of them IMO. The script controlled his lines and how he should say them, and Singer controlled everything else. We all remember hearing Routh was told to stop getting so big because he couldn’t fit in the suit. So there’s the prime example of why he didn’t have the iconic superman build. The guy deserves another shot with a script that is worthy to be put on the big screen.
Brandon Routh IS Superman. Bring him back for the reboot!

jennie garth almost ran me over in burbank. she was really sorry and nice about it.
Brandon Routh was a disaster as Superman. He is not even an actor. He has no talent at all, to perform this character. Superman Returns is as boring as Routh !
