Sir Ian Holm has been confirmed to play Pope John Paul II in a new TV mini-series.

Recently most famous for the Lord Of The Rings movies where he played Bilbo Baggins, Sir Ian Holm will star as the elderly Pope in the production, tentatively titled John Paul II.

The American biopic will use two actors to play the late Pope – Holm will take the story from when he was elected Pope to his death last year and another, unannounced actor will play him in the early years.

Vatican historians have fact-checked the script, and the production has been granted access to film in St Peters Square.

But who will fill the remaining roles – who’ll play Bono, for instance?
