Winona Ryder hasn’t made this many people happy since her sticky fingers sent CNN’s ratings through the roof. Prepare yourself – a Beetlejuice sequel might be happening, and it might not suck as much as you’d think.
Winona Ryder has hinted that Lydia might be returning for Beetlejuice 2 along with Michael Keaton and maybe even Tim Burton.?What started off as a ‘Mean Girls 2’ level disaster- that’s just above the Star Wars prequels and just below ‘Son Of The Mask’ – is actually starting to earn its stripes.
Talking to Daily Beast, Winona all but said that we’re about to be reunited with Lydia and her impressive collection of veiled hats.
“I’m kind of sworn to secrecy. But it sounds like it might be happening.”
Three cheers for desperately trying to claw back your lost childhood by watching sequels made nearly thirty years after the original! There’s always the chance that this could ruin a beloved kids film for millions of people but Winona seems to think that the original cast and crew would be willing to take that chance:
“It’s a very precious movie to people, so there are a lot people like, ‘DON’T…I would never go near [a sequel] if it was not Tim and Michael. Because those guys, I love.”
It’s not written in stone that Tim Burton will return – he’s probably trying to find a way to credibly fit Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp in there somewhere before he signs on the dotted line. But one thing’s for certain and that’s that we get to see Lydia’s transition in to a strange and unusual adult.
“It’s not a remake. It’s 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”
Spoiler alert: she marries a Vulcan and becomes a professional ballerina. Which probably still wouldn’t be the weirdest part of a Beetlejuice sequel.
Michael Keaton’s already told TMZ that he’s reprising his role as Betelgeuse, but so far there’s been no word from the rest of the cast. Oh, who cares, the most interesting two characters are on board, and that’s all that matters!

Great! Now we just need to sigh Michael Keaton up for a decent sequel to 1989’s “Batman” movie (and totally disregard every other Batman movie since then). The original sequel felt like a whole other universe, for some reason, and Michael’s really has been the only portrayal of the character that’s worth the price of a movie ticket. Johnny Depp could make a great Joker, with a little adult supervision thrown in to keep him and Burton out of trouble.
Winona, if you’re out there….. you are totally gorgeous!
