Beatles_varietyAn incisive and not-at-all predictable poll by strange-slang-talkin’ Hollywood ‘bible’ Variety has placed The Beatles atop their list of the most culturally significant entertainers of the last 100 years.

Reports that the top slot was hotly contested by The Chuckle Brothers have yet to be confirmed.

Variety editor Steven Gaydos explained the reasoning behind the monumental leap of imagination (CDs) of calling The Beatles quite important:

"To celebrate 100 years of Variety, it seemed only natural to celebrate 100 of the people who gave us something to talk about. We’re excited to honour The Beatles in our special edition centenary issue, giving special recognition to the sole group who has most shaped the face of modern-day showbusiness."

He also went on to point out that the Earth is round, water can make you wet and that milk comes from cows.

1 - The Beatles (shock revelation blah blah blah)

2 - Louis Armstrong (bulgy-eyed trumpet man)

3 - Lucille Ball (actress from I Love Lucy. We’re as puzzled as you)

4 - Humphrey Bogart (had a sad face and smoked a bit)

5 - Marlon Brando (had a sad face and ate a lot)

6 - Charlie Chaplin (twatted around at a dinner table; suddenly became ‘genius’)

7 - James Dean (good looking and dead. All bases covered, then)

8 - Marilyn Monroe (see above)

9 - Mickey Mouse (not actually real)

10 - Elvis Presley (shock revelation blah blah blah number two)

Hey - reading that poll was actually quite fun. Perhaps Channel Four could do something revolving around this idea? They could call it The 100 Greatest Movies or The 100 Best Ever Pop Singles or something.

It’d be a whole new direction for the channel …
