Steve_davis_personality_2005_outsidersSummer’s over, and the days are getting shorter. And so our minds naturally drift to the end of the year and the announcement of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year. Not that we particularly care who wins – remember kids, organised sport is evil – but we can bet on the result and make lots of money.

You don’t need to be a crazy old red-eyed psychic to realise who the favourite to win this is at the moment (hint: he’s a big tall drunk crickety bloke), but it’d be foolish to stop keeping a close eye on the market before it closes – there are some fantastically long odds on some outsiders who, if they win, will make some people very rich indeed.

So let’s take a look at the odds of some of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year outsiders, with some help from Betfair.com

Audley Harrison – Hey kids, remember Audley Harrison? He did quite well at boxing at the Olympics five years ago, and then boasted about how he’d soon be the boxing champion of the universe sitting down with his hands tied behind his back. But in actual fact, he got a bit porky and only tried to fight tiny weedy girly men. And then everyone forgot about him. He has horrifically long odds at the moment, but who knows? Maybe the moon will fall from the sky and Audley will save the world by punching it back in place. That’s pretty much the only way he’ll win this year. Current odds – 999/1

Steve Davis – Yes. Steve Davis. Maybe someone got confused and thought that they were voting for Sports Personality Of The Year 1985, but somehow Steve Davis is up for it this year. We’re not entirely sure what he’s done to deserve it. Maybe being the eighth-best snooker player in the world stands for something these days. Or maybe doing the commentary for a PSP snooker game still makes you a sports personality. Current odds – 999/1

Andrew Murray – We’d imagine that Andrew Murray is in the running because he’s slightly better than Tim Henman at tennis. So what? The old fella that collects trolleys at our local Tesco is probably better at tennis than Tim Henman at the moment. Andrew Murray has many things to look forward to in his career, namely disappointing all of Britain once each year by never even getting to the semi-finals at Wimbledon. But Sports Personality Of The Year 2005? Not a chance. Current odds – 999/1

Dan Wheldon – Who hell Dan Wheldon? Who hell he? Well, he drives a car in America. And he looks like he should be in a boyband. These are the only two interesting points about Dan Wheldon. Current odds – 999/1

Zara Phillips – She’s practically the bloody Queen, what’s she going to do with a lousy BBC trophy? And notice the word ‘Personality’ in the title of the award. Zara is many things – posh, eyebrowless, the best-looking royal (even if that is a little bit like being the least stinky puddle of diarrhoea) and OK at riding a horse – but none of these things constitutes actually having a personality. Current odds – 999/1

If any of these beauties actually manage to win the Sports Personality Of The Year award, someone is going to get rich.
