Badvertising – Cadbury’s Eyebrows

By Matthew Laidlow on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 11:30am17 Comments

Digg this!

Cadbury's Eyebrows, Cadbury's advert, eyebrow advertThis isn’t so much a crap commercial where an advertiser thought of the idea ten seconds before the pitch.

It’s just really annoying and pointless really and we don’t understand what it does to promote slabs of chocolate.

Whilst we get slight amusement at laughing at two stupid-looking children with some sort of facial deformity, it gets boring after a while. In the future, the childstars will develop a sense of dred after being recognised when being let out in public.

They’ll also grow to hate their parents after finding out they let them appear in the advert for £50 and a year’s supply of Wispa bars each.

Perhaps their tongues should have gone mental, not their eyebrows. After all, we eat with our mouths and not our facial hair. Well, there was that once.

Totally disagree – what’s great about this advert is that people like it and so they talk about it and the brand behind it.
We all know chocolate tastes nice but adverts reminding us of this fact are normally cheesy in attempting to be seductive (flake) or backed by a stick thin celebrity that clearly doesn’t eat anything involving calories or dairy or carbs(KitKat Sensation, Magnum).
So, what’s great is that Cadbury’s have developed a campaign all around raising brand awareness and making people smile which is a lot better than most of the hard sell and/or patronising dirge out there.

I completly agree with Mollypolly nd disagree 2 what this Matthew laidlow has to say. This advert is verry funny and entertaning, and there should be more adverts like it. Also I am 12 now and there is no one I know who doesnt like it, so he can just shut his mouth!! nd get a life..because no one reli cares what he thinks and he should mind out cuz hes gunna get alot o enimeis soon if hes not carefull!!!

  • Joke Police says:

Well done MollyPolly, a free chocolate bar for you from the boss.

  • mcyi9jm2 says:

I agree with MollyPolly – usually I agree with Hecklersprays take on things but you’re wrong here.. WRONG! I absolutely love this advert!!

I hate adverts and mute the TV but this one makes me laugh my ass off – I admit this may mean I’m a bit simple…

Thanks for brightening my day Hecklerspray!

  • David says:

Its annoying because Cadbury reckon they’re being ’so random’ with all these recent strange crap adverts.

  • Stabby McGee says:

The vast majority of adverts are shit, as are the garbage television shows they are used to sandwich. This particular advert was mildly amusing the first time it was shown, simply because the dancing eyebrows were the last thing you’d expect. Better than watching old has-been actors flogging stair-lifts and hemorrhoid cream.

I hate to come across all militant and cheerless, but television really is bollocks, isn’t it? Aargh.

  • Kattia says:

Hilarious, eccentric advert with nothing to do with chocolate. It made us all laugh and yes, it worked, we remember the advert and what it was selling.

    More ads like this please.

  • Horror says:

This advert is complete garbage. I work in the advertising industry and this is widely regarded by pretty much everyone I speak to as absolute trash. The monkey one was ok, the airport vehicles one was cringeworthy, and this is painful.

The problem faces every company that sells sweets/crisps/pop/cereal and all that kid-friendly shit. They have to advertise it, but they’re not allowed to advertise it specifically to kids anymore. So, like Coco Pops have had to do, they try to do something funny and ‘random’ with a soundtrack from years ago. That way it can be excused as nostalgia with a hint of surreal comedy.

Advertising and design is collapsing in the UK, mainly due to the chummy old-boys’-club nature of it, but also due to talentless little toffs waltzing into daddies agency for a creative managers job, and collecting a bonus for his first brain-fart.

    I blame Lilly Allen.

    • sludgegulper says:

“Advertising and design is collapsing in the UK” according to you. this may be true but not for the reason you mention. It’s because wankers like you work in it and have become removed from the day to day lives of ordinary people and don’t understand what makes people “tick”.British chocolate is some of the worst muck ever foisted upon an unsuspecting/unknowing race of people, the purveyors of this shit need all the help they can get to sell their garbage, this advert does just that (unfortunately).
I concur with Stabby McGee above, english/american (not much difference really)TV is garbage… come to think of it, most TV around the world is too. Let’s all get back to radio then we wouldn’t have to put up with all those over-paid chavs and tarts poncing around in front of us.

  • Nonplussed says:

Advertising and design in the UK collapsed a long time ago, it’s been crap for years. What the trade can’t do is justify the costs to the client anymore and my God, don’t they get what they pay for? It wasn’t so long ago that the very notion of generic foreign commercials being broadcast in the UK with ill-matching voice-overs would have been completely unthinkable but they’re common now and no one comments because no one’s actually watching aside from two lesbians and a dog somewhere in Hull. British broadcasting is astonishingly bad.

  • Ironlung says:

so apparently advertising is collapsing in the UK? Huzzah! i hope you all end up on the streets advertising your “Famous Statues replicated using hair and shit”

christ, something to look forward to a last!

  • Amanda Berry says:

Maybe no one watches adverts on TV any more so the adverts have to be interesting, or bad enough to go viral on the internet.

  • Deena Rose says:

    I really like the commercial.

  • tylah says:

well hey , maybe this is what they wanted ??
i mean you are all talking about it and the add is getting heaps of publicity ?? hello ??
and it is an awesome and funny ad.

  • jonny says:

THIS AD IS SO FUNNY AND AWESOME SO GET OVER YOURSELF !

  • Dannip says:

I don’t see how you can’t understand the psychology behind this ad. I mean… let’s face it I am showing my age, but I still remember You’ll wonder where the yellow went… ( if you don’t remember the rest you’re too young)
