This week: Odd Sightings/Cryptozoology
The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp is a giant human-shaped lizard that mostly attacks parked cars in South Carolina. The cluster of sightings started in the summer of 1988, and spread out over all of Lee County. The sightings were so frequent that according to one source:
"…police were receiving so many calls about the Lizard Man that people with more immediate problems could not get through, and a separate Lizard Man Hotline had to be established."
Quite a while ago we told you all about sightings of the Loveland Frog, a creature generally assumed to be part frog, part man. Today we have another lizardy treat for you in The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp (AKA The Lizard Man Of Lee County).
The latter of those amphibious people exploded onto the sightings scene on June 29, 1988 when 17 year old Christopher Davis pulled over to fix a flat tire. He'd just finished fixing it when, as he put it:
“I looked back and saw something running across the field towards me. It was about 25 yards away and I saw red eyes glowing. I ran into the car and as I locked it, the thing grabbed the door handle. I could see him from the neck down – the three big fingers, long black nails and green rough skin. It was strong and angry. I looked in my mirror and saw a blur of green running. I could see his toes and then he jumped on the roof of my car. I thought I heard a grunt and then I could see his fingers through the front windshield, where they curled around on the roof. I sped up and swerved to shake the creature off.”
When the boy got home he exploded into his house waking his parents. His father got up, went outside and checked the car and sure enough – there were deep claw marks all along the roof. There were also scratches around the door handle and a side mirror had been twisted out of place.
As we said earlier, this was the first of a whole bunch of sightings that happened that summer, but it's the only one we seem to be able to find any documentation of – with one exception, but Wikipedia can explain it better than we can:
"On August 5 Kenneth Orr, an airman stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, filed a report with the police saying that he had encountered the Lizard Man on highway 15, and that he had shot and wounded it. He presented several scales and a small quantity of blood as evidence."
Hard evidence there, did you see that? Not really – Wikipedia goes on:
"Orr recanted this account two days later when he was arraigned for unlawfully carrying a pistol, and the misdemeanour offence of filing a false police report. According to Orr, he had invented the sighting in order to keep stories about the Lizard Man in circulation."
And there's the story of the Lizard man all laid out for you. Two documented sightings, one of which was later rescinded by a man who admitted making it up. Is the Lizard man real?
We can only hope.
