This week: Strange Facts/Scientific Wonders
Sure, we lumped this story under scientific wonders – but we're not sure it's an exact fit. Although this is an account so jaw-dropping even the usually unimpressed will find themselves swimming in disbelief at what they're seeing, we find it a tad more cruel than scientifically miraculous.
It's part of the story of a 1930s Russian scientist named Dr.Sergei S. Bryukhonenko, and it involves really old footage of his Frankenstein-like experiments. From the headline up there, you can probably guess just what he was trying to do.
As we already said, Dr. Bryukhonenko was an award-winning Russian scientist who went on to conduct the Soviet Union's first open heart surgery in the late fifties. Before that though, his experiments were far more eyebrow raising. As Wikipedia puts it:
"Bryukhonenko is primarily remembered for his development of the autojektor, a primitive heart and lung machine. The device was used with mixed results in a series of experiments with canines during the late 1930s."
That 'experiments with canines,' you may be interested to know, included things like bleeding them to death then bringing them back to life. They also included cutting off at least two dog heads, but still keeping them 'alive' in their new decapitated form. The autojektor Bryukhonenko created is what made it possible.
As far as the severed heads go – the best we can tell is that the doctor hooked hoses up to the bodiless dog's necessary head-veins to enable blood flow mechanically. As we've already noted, from the photos we've seen, the experiments included at least two dog heads – the one from the photo up there, and the one in the video. It's hard to believe, but seems to be very true.
The available footage is long – almost twenty minutes – and the severed head portion is towards the beginning. Following that Bryukhonenko's other experiments were shown. These others show dogs being drained of all blood, and left dead for ten full minutes. After the right amount of time elapsed the dogs were brought back to life when their red fluids were reintroduced. The thought of all this creepy scientific mumbo-jumbo is enough to keep us up at nights. The following clip is called Experiments in the revival of organisms, it seems to be 100% true, and you can watch it here. Be warned, though – you’ll need a strong stomach.
If you think this is sick, wait 'til you see next week's disturbing Awesome or Off-Putting – it's Bryukhonenko x 10.

Common sense should cause one to question the factual nature of this video.
I wonder why the apparatus is not examined in the video, and why we are never shown that the head is in fact severed.
As well, the dog clearly moves in a way that would be impossible if it was indeed only a head. How does it lift it’s snout off the table when reacting to stimuli?
