In all the tragic confusion of Anna Nicole Smith's 20-year-old son strangely dying days after the birth of her daughter, people didn't get the chance to ask the question "just whose baby is that, anyway?"
And we'll never get to ask that question, because Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer Howard K Stern has stepped up to claim that he is the daddy of Anna Nicole Smith's daughter. Yes, Howard K Stern says that he and Anna Nicole Smith are in love and, no, he's not just shacking up with Anna Nicole Smith for the money, because chasing money is something a lawyer would never do.
Making fun of the fact that nobody seemed to know the identity of Anna Nicole Smith's baby daughter's father was something we were planning on extensively taking the piss out of, until Anna Nicole Smith's son Daniel suddenly died two days after the baby's birth, at least. Since then, the main topic of conversation has been the cause of death for Daniel Smith. There have now been two separate post mortems carried out and, while drugs haven't been firmly ruled out, nobody is really sure how Daniel Smith died.
But at least we know now that Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer Howard K Stern is the father of her newborn daughter, as Stern told Larry King that he was a "proud father," adding:
"We love each other and it's been going on for a very long time and because of my relationship as her lawyer, we felt it was best to keep everything hidden. And we've done a pretty good job of that. I've loved her for quite some time and hopefully the feeling's mutual. At some point, we will [get married]. Right now we have to somehow get through what we're going through."
We should have seen it coming. All the time while we were speculating about Anna Nicole Smith's pregnancy – and even after Anna Nicole Smith's pregnancy was confirmed – Stern was gleefully dropping hints like:
"If Anna Nicole is pregnant, she obviously doesn't want anybody to know yet."
We're guessing that Anna Nicole Smith finally fell for Howard K Stern's charms after they spent so much time together at the US Supreme Court – after all, nothing is quite so romantic as quibbling over a dead man's will, is there? But at least Anna Nicole Smith has a shoulder to cry on during her difficult time – even if we do get the impression that Howard K Stern is probably charging her by the hour for it.
