These days it's strange to think that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt actually make films – most people just assume that they jet around the world hoovering up babies and starting deliberately annoying the media – but the Jolie-Pitt trip to Cannes has changed that.
Angelina Jolie was in Cannes yesterday to talk up her movie A Mighty Heart, based on the memoirs of Mariane Pearl – the widow of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl. And the Mighty Heart interview with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt – who co-produced the film – was as serious and downbeat as you'd expect, with Angelina Jolie taking on lots of emotionally-charged questions about hatred, responsibility and fear. Word has it that if this interview session for A Mighty Heart is a success, Angelina Jolie is going to copy it wholesale for Kung Fu Panda.
When Angelina Jolie first announced her involvement in A Mighty Heart, it seemed like the obvious movie to suit her new job as love-exuding humanitarian. Angelina Jolie would get to play Mariane Pearl, a woman who'd been through a horrific ordeal on both a personal and political level – and that means Oscars!
However, the actual story of A Mighty Heart looked like it was set to be overshadowed by all the nonsense surrounding the filming of the movie in India. Not only did Angelina Jolie have to black up to play Mariane Heart, but she and Brad Pitt seemed to want to enrage the entire subcontinent with a procession of photographer choking, busy train hijacking, knocking boys off their bikes and starting near-riots with the phrase "bloody Indians." And, as a final insult, they didn't even bother adopting anyone.
But that's all over now, and it's time for Angelina Jolie to show A Mighty Heart to the world. Now, a film as serious and harrowing as A Mighty Heart needs to be treated carefully – any jokes could undermine the important message of what a serious and harrowing world we live in – so don't expect to fall off your seat laughing at Angelina Jolie's lauding of the real-life Mariane Pearl, provided by Forbes:
"For me, so much of why this film was important to do is because I highly doubt there is anybody in this room who has more reason to hold hate inside herself than Mariane, and she doesn't. She is a very compassionate, thoughtful person who looks to dialogue to change things, to make things better. … That is, I think, a lesson for all of us."
Angelina Jolie then went on to add that, despite all this, she has nicer lips than Mariane Pearl plus she's totally done it with Brad Pitt and Mariane Pearl hasn't so she wins.
Early reviews of A Mighty Heart seem to be generally positive, with much praise being heaped on the sensitive, realistic portrayal of the claustrophobic chaos surrounding Mariane Pearl as she hopelessly attempted to search for her missing husband. However, it's probably just the case that the reviewers, like us, are just relieved that Jennifer Aniston had nothing to do with the film.
