Andy Dick Sorry For Being An Unfunny Douche-Hole

Christmas has come early for Michael Richards. While Mel Gibson had to wait four long months for someone to say something dumb and take the heat off him, Michael Richards has suffered less than three weeks of it, and it's all thanks to Andy Dick.

Andy Dick - who many of you will know as the unfunniest man on the planet - is in hot water after an impromptu set at a comedy gig ended up with Andy Dick bellowing "you're all a bunch of niggers!" at the audience, presumably in a cheap attempt to shock them. And it worked - the shocked audience all duly ran off to inform the news organisations of their choice that Andy Dick is an unfunny racist. And now, thanks to Andy Dick, we get to go through the tiring 'strained semi-apology followed by more sincere apology' palaver all over again. It'll be interesting to see if Jesse Jackson tries to organise a boycott of Andy Dick's recently-cancelled sitcom Less Than Perfect DVDs soon, although not as interesting as finding out that nobody bought them anyway.

Andy Dick used to be a fan of the cheap, shock-based laugh. You could see it in his band, Andy Dick And The Bitches Of The Century; you could see it in his cameo as the cucumber-fellating sex expert in Old School and you can hear it on his radio show The Shit Show. Now, though, Andy Dick seems to be a fan of the stunned shock-based silence, as a recent stint at an improv night shows. Access Hollywood reports:

Dick had been heckling [comedian Ian] Bagg from the audience and then joined him onstage, when the two discussed [Michael] Richards. When Dick exited the stage, he suddenly grabbed the microphone and shouted at the crowd, "You're all a bunch of …"' - using the n-word.

Is it just us, or does Andy Dick's outburst indicate an increasing lack of effort when offending a portion of society. To his credit, between driving around dangerously drunk and blaming the Fucking Jews for all the wars ever, Mel Gibson did at least call someone "Sugar Tits", but Michael Richards avoided the cheerily misogynistic remark when he shouted the word "nigger" seven times at a heckler, instead opting for a somewhat inventive - although we suspect physically impossible - insult about suspending black people upside down with forks in the anuses. Andy Dick didn't even bother with that, though. "You're all a bunch of niggers" and nothing more - that's just lazy. But now Andy Dick has taken the first step in the Shamed Celebrity rehabilitation scheme - the awkward semi-apology:

"I chose to make a joke about a subject that is not funny. In an attempt to make light of a serious subject, I have offended a lot of people, and I am sorry for my insensitivity. I wish to apologise to Ian, to the club and its patrons and to anyone who was hurt or offended by my remark."

Unless this story suddenly dies down, the next step will be for Andy Dick to apologise to the notoriously hard-to-please duo of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson before Michael Richards follows Mel Gibson's lead and passes the torch with a statement about how bad he feels for Andy Dick.

But perhaps we should take Andy Dick's apology at face value - he says he's only guilty of an outburst of ill-judged insensitivity and nothing more. In which case, we shouldn't think that Andy Dick is a racist. No, we should think Andy Dick is a compulsively unfunny nobsack. Because he is.
