Fans are today mourning the cancellation of Ugly Betty. Well, not ‘fans’ as such, more ‘people’.
And ‘mourning’ doesn’t sound right, either. ‘Apathetically aware of’? Yes, that works better. We’ll start again. People are today apathetically aware of the cancellation of Ugly Betty. Oh, that’ll do.
Anyway, Ugly Betty – the TV show for people who liked The Devil Wears Prada but wished it was longer and more interminable – has been cancelled by ABC. It’s a real shame – where are people going to get their fix of stories about bizarre-looking people who like wearing ridiculous clothes now? What? Sex And The City 2? Oh, OK.
This is easily the most exciting time of year for TV fans. A new season of 24 has just started, which means that we’ve probably got a good two months before the ludicrous plotlines about Robert Mugabe running around the White House with a machine gun kick in. The final season of Lost is less than a week away, which means that we’re around four months away from what’s probably going to be the most frustratingly vague finale in television history, and Ugly Betty has been cancelled. The holy trinity is complete.
That’s right – after four years of doing its best to disguise the fact that America Ferrera is actually quite pretty, Ugly Betty will soon be no more. Why? MSNBC reports:
It was moved to Friday nights at the start of the 2009-2010 season, replaced in its usual primetime slot by “FlashForward.”… ABC had tried to ramp up the show’s viewership by moving it to Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. The network is promising that the series will conclude its run in a fashion that will satisfy its fans. ABC says eight episodes are left.
Well let’s hope that ABC lives up to its promise and gives Ugly Betty the finale that it deserves. And not just for Betty herself – we want all the characters to have happy endings. Like, um… that receptionist boy and… oh, who are we kidding? We’ve only seen about one episode of Ugly Betty, and we’ve spent the intervening three years trying to erase that from our minds by any means necessary. It wasn’t really very good, was it?
But still, if nothing else people will remember Ugly Betty after it disappears. True, they’ll mainly remember it as the show that Lindsay Lohan got booted out of for being awful, but that’s better than nothing, isn’t it?
So don’t be sad that Ugly Betty has gone. This should be a celebration. A celebration of all the happiness that Ugly Betty ever gave us. A celebration that ABC is probably going to fill the gap with another hokey sci-fi show that seems to star half the cast of Lost. And, more than anything else, a celebration that Glee will probably go the same way in a year or two.

How dare you, Ugly betty was a great show and was loved by many people! It showed women in a better light and was a positive message for young girls.
There is so much rubbish on TV and whats with all the soaps?
I am very sad it is over!
I know 5 other MILLION people will miss it too just because it’s drop a few viewers doesn’t mean it doesn’t have ahigh fan base.
I don’t want TV myself but I buy the series I like on DVD and watch it.
What! This is politically inccorrect! Don’t you know this show was made for the hispanic population? True, it was made from a producer stupid enough to think if the viewers are hispanic they are stupid enouigh to buy it but that’s doesn’t allow you to make politically uncorrect comments!!!
Era un programa de televisión estúpido – no matter the target demographics – besides everyone knows Hispanics only watch telenovelas and futbol,¡ay, caramba!
Ugly Betty was the “Princess Diaries” of sitcoms: you might have found it entertaining if you tend not to think much. The fact that it was on the mouse network was no accident.
And for every instance in which it “portrayed women in a positive light”, there were 10 instances in which it portayed them as either sniveling, weak crybabies or hardcore dominatrices.
I guess Selma Hayek’s desire to cram the show full of “fashion celebrities” who couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag could not have had anything to do with it’s decline, could it? Or the in-your-face gay story lines? Naaaaaahhh…..
Story lines about Betty’s family were far better than those involving her job. Alas, the latter dominated. It was painful to watch so many cardboard characters straining to be zany. Thank you ABC, for protecting channel surfers from an accidental eye blast…
I watched the first episode for about 2 min and that was more than enough.
I’m suprised it lasted as long as it did.
At least there isn’t enough interest to commit to reruns. The show was a worthless time slot filler. Makes my day to see stupid stuff go away
You all need to get back to work and stop acting like you star in “Ugly Betty!!”
I’m pretty sure Ugly Betty must do something pretty kinky to get all that attention!
Congrats, troglodytes, you can now lumber back to yer Blowin’ Up Stuff TV!, staring biatches, hos and all the jack me weaponry you can suck on. Another dang twang, all around!
Whew, Betty’s gone and you’re safe from the theater types (who all get way more ‘tang than you, Cleetus) and all that “schmacting” stuff, and oh, I dunno, feeling – cause we know there’s no room for feeling when you think hard all the time, eh hero?
Thank apple pie! and one dimensional who’s bad / who’s good bloodess television quasi-murder for relieving you of the last requisite scrap of sentient insight that nobody ever credited you with anyway. You’re saved, be ye healed.
America! Fake, Yeah!
What? How can something like this be published on the web? I like Ugly Betty. How can it even be legal to say anything negative about it if I like it? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?
If you don’t start treating everything that I like with unadulterated praise I will whine even louder. Then pop out in my Chevy truck to get some Freedom Fries and sasparilla.
I LOVE UGLY BETTY! NETWOK NEEDS TO RECONSIDER…
ABC has made a terrible mistake by cancelling “UGLY BETTY”. It was one of the few dramas/comedies on mainstream TV that I made a point of watching. I always found the stories entertaining, insightful, and at times heartbreaking (e.g. the relationship between Betty and Henry the young accountant at Mode, Hilda’s resurgent relationship with her son Justin’s father — and Daniel’s relationship with his friend Connor’s girlfriend). Frankly, ABC should have kept “UGLY BETTY” in its Thursday evening slot.
