There is something very important you should know about me: no two televisions shows have defined my existence and shaped me as a person quite like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Golden Girls. IMHO, they’re two of the most perfectly made television shows in existence.
Am I a huge, die hard Buffy fan? Yes. Does that mean I’d love to see more Buffy? Meh, not really. The seasons the show had were amazing and the finale was legitimate television perfection. So, when I read that they were rebooting Buffy, well….I think you can imagine how I felt about it.
Original Buffy creator, Joss Whedon, is involved with the reboot, and they’re allegedly looking to cast an African-American actress as the titular character, with the rest of the cast being more representative of the diverse world we live in, and while I’m all here for a show about a vampire slayer without the cast being predominantly white (hell, let’s just say all white…and almost all straight until season 4), it’s the fact that they’re calling her Buffy that really has me irked.
If you’re a Buffy fan, then you know it is 100% possible for their to be other slayers. Hell, at the end of the series there were a whole slew of other slayers, so if they were like “Okay, we want to expand upon the Buffy universe by giving the world a new, young slayer” I would be like “Okay, that fits with the previous show and I’m down. Let’s see what’s up!” But, as far as I’ve read, they’re not doing that. They’re recasting Buffy herself, and, uhhh, Sarah Michelle Gellar is forever Buffy sooooo wtf?
You want to give the world a new slayer? Fine. You want to repackage already iconic characters? No. I mean, they didn’t recast Princess Leia when Carrie Fisher died, and YES, I am putting Buffy on the same iconic pedestal as Leia.
Maybe Joss and whoever is running this shit show will wake up and realize they should just give us a whole new slayer rather than fucking up something that’s already got a huge following, but as of right now, I am NOT here for this reboot, and I love a good reboot (the new Ducktales and Muppet Babies are lit #MomLife)
