Having a baby is a beautiful thing, regardless of whether or not it was bought into the world in total silence, or if the mother was so repulsed by the baby that she fantasised about hurling it against a wall.
Just as well, because between Brooke Shields and Tom Cruise, both of these angles have probably been covered. And, for all their relentless scrapping in the past, Tom and Brooke appear to have put their differences behind them. A good thing, because their new kids are bound to bond over the next few years as the realisation of their equally demented names starts to kick in.
Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields started off as friends and co-stars of Endless Love in 1981. Then things went a little sour after Brooke Shields went public about her postpartum depression following the birth of her first child and her love of the anti-depressant Paxil. This annoyed Tom Cruise who – in the middle of his spectacular War Of The Worlds publicity meltdown – all but declared war on Brooke for relying on prescription drugs.
Then Brooke Shields hit back, calling Tom Cruise "ridiculous" and then promptly getting pregnant again seemingly just to spite Cruise. However, this plan backfired after Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes brought baby Suri into the world on the exact same day that Brooke Shields gave birth to baby Grier. And in the very same hospital, too.
As far as cosmic jokes go, it's a doozy. Even more so if Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields had decided to instill their children with the irrational hatred for each other that makes being a parent such a big lark. Sadly, though, that hasn't been the case – Brooke Shields seems to want to let bygones be bygones, and has extended an olive branch to Tom Cruise. Talking to Access Hollywood, she said:
"You know, the irony is perfect. The world works in an interesting way, but we (were) both pretty busy that day."
Then, when asked if there were likely to be any more potential flare-ups between Tom and Brooke, she replied:
"No. God, no, and it's a gift having kids, you know, so it's a beautiful thing rather than anything else."
