The Hollywood Walk Of Fame is a grand, 46-year-old tradition where celebrities who have reached an unattainable level of fame are honoured by having a star bearing their name cemented into the ground for generations to come.
Now, far be it for us to suggest that Hollywood has run out of famous people to recognise with a star on the Walk Of Fame, but the latest blockbuster name to be awarded a Hollywood star kind of makes us think that; it's Winnie The Pooh. That's right – big stupid yellow bear Winnie The Pooh, star of box office hits such as Winnie The Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year and TV shows such as Boo! To You! Winnie The Pooh!
At first sight, Winnie The Pooh isn't an obvious contender for a Hollywood Walk Of Fame star. After all, the man who drew Pooh – Ernest Howard Shepherd – hated the bear, a feeling shared by the real-life Christopher Robin, who was endlessly bullied at school over his association with Winnie The Pooh. And many fans of the gentle, pastoral Winnie The Pooh are appalled by the recent gangsta Pooh makeover.
In fact, we were under the impression that the only people who still liked Winnie The Pooh were filthy idiot hippies who saw similarities between Pooh and Taoism. But nobody listens to hippies, so they don't really count.
But Winnie The Pooh really has earnt his Hollywood Walk Of Fame star, joining luminaries like Destiny's Child and, er, Ryan Seacrest. Because Winnie The Pooh is one of Disney's most popular characters. Winnie The Pooh merchandise has netted Disney $1 billion – as much as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto and Goofy combined. Plus Poland loves Winnie The Pooh so much that there's a street named after him in Warsaw. And that has to count for something.
The Hollywood Walk Of Fame star for Winnie The Pooh is just part of his 80th birthday celebrations, and honourary Hollywood mayor Johnny Grant says that animated characters are just as worthy Walk Of Fame additions as flesh and blood actors:
"[they] are an important part of the industry now. Some of the movies [the studios] are putting out don't do so well, but animated characters are doing great business."
Winnie The Pooh was unable to comment about his Hollywood Walk Of Fame star. Because he's not bloody real, dipshit.
