When Nicolas Cage makes a film, you’re never sure if you’ll get the intelligent, quirky, Nicolas Cage or the rubbish action film Nicolas Cage. 50 Cent, on the other hand, has only ever made crap films.
So the news that Nicolas Cage and 50 Cent are teaming up to star in a film together called The Dance has left us unsure of whether the movie will be 50% arse or 100% arse. For simplicity’s sake, let’s just say The Dance will be 75% arse and be done with it.
If someone pitched you a movie on the basis that it starred Nicolas
Cage and 50 Cent, you’d turn it down, wouldn’t you? After all, a movie
starring a man who thinks that giving his son a ridiculous name is cool and a man who Canada wants to ban is bound to fail, right?
Well, maybe not. Even though Nicolas Cage and 50 Cent are teaming up
for The Dance, that isn’t to say that The Dance will be a National
Treasure-style miscast mess, a potential mess like the Nicolas
Cage-starring remake of The Wicker Man or a planet-offending conveyor belt of glorified violence like 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Tryin’.
In fact, The Dance sounds like it could be a Million Dollar
Baby-style critical hit. Well, at least it would be if it didn’t star
Nicolas Cage and 50 Cent. MTV describes The Dance as being:
based on "The Dance –
The Billy Roth Story," a 2003 documentary on Roth executive produced by
Cage, with an eye toward developing a feature film on the trainer. Roth
was a successful boxer who went on to spend more than 40 years as a
volunteer boxing coach in Louisiana state prisons. Cage will take on
the title role, while 50 is slated to play an inmate Roth believes has
enough talent to be a contender, if only he wasn’t serving a life
sentence.
So
who knows? Maybe The Dance really will be a great movie. After all, it
has a sad but inspirational storyline, and – although we’re about the only people
in the world who actually liked Nicolas Cage in The Weather Man – it seems to be a subject he has a real passion for. And as for
50 Cent… well, OK, so maybe The Dance won’t be that great.
