It’s a dead-heat, adoption-wise. That’s if you consider celebrities adopting abroad to be some sort of despicable race. In front, of course, you have the now twin carrying Angelina Jolie, who’s adopted twice in recent years. But right behind her you have Meg "I can raise ’em too" Ryan.
Meg Ryan has recently spent some time over in China before greeting and meeting her soon-to-be daughter in the US consulate. That’s just one adoption though, Jolie’s got two. If Meg is serious about adopting her way to the lead, may we suggest several of our staff members. There’s Bev down in the mail room, or Paul over in reception. Those two would be a tough raise, though, as Bev hates vegetables and Paul’s a male receptionist.
But hey, does Meg want to take the lead or not?
Meg Ryan (DVDs) has recently adopted an infant Chinese girl. No details
have been given yet, except this from an unspecified source in the
know, regarding the decision to adopt now while Ryan’s single:
"Meg
says because she is currently unattached, she is ready to go at it
again on her own."
That, and her 44-year-old clock’s a-tickin’.
But what better place to adopt from than China. Though it’s
geographically enormous, most of it is uninhabitable and mountainous.
China’s population is far too big to squeeze into their little livable
patch of land. The government hopes to get it’s mainland population
below 1.37 billion (compared to 297,970,986 currently in the US and the
UK’s 60,270,708) by 2010.
And then you have China’s one child rule. It was described thusly by Chinese Vice-Premier Chen Muhua in 1979:
"A
policy of encouragement and punishment for maternity, with
encouragement as the main feature, will be implemented. Parents having
one child will be encouraged, and strict measures will be enforced to
control the birth of two or more babies. Everything should be done to
insure that the natural population growth rate in China falls to zero
by 2000."
The Chinese families affected by this law (i.e. all of them) are
have a concern that if their one child is a girl, the family name won’t
be carried on. This leads to a strong male preference, and
many-a-lonely Chinese girl A very sad state of affairs.
That said, nice job Meg, but hecklerspray dearly hopes this baby
adopting doesn’t become too big of a Hollywood fad. If Paris Hilton
ever steps out with a Chinese baby sitting upright in her pink Prada
bag, you’ll see some very angry smoke pouring out of our keyboards.

Meg Ryan Adopts A Girl – People
[story by Shawn Lindseth]
Daisy says
You make adoption sound like it’s a game. Adoption is not a game! It’s not who’s adopting who and how many. It’s also not a “Way to go” and “What a wonderful thing she is doing.” I am an adptive mother witha daughter who was from China. I consider myself the lucky one. I’m so tired of people glamorizing adoption. As if it is “the thing to do”.
